The proposed categories of research strengths for the College of Education and Human Development (CEHD) include the following:

The following is an overview of the process undertaken by Dr. Linda Skrla and the CEHD Council of Principal Investigators (CPI) to identify the five CEHD research strengths listed above as part of the University Academic Master Plan process led by Dr. Jeffrey S. Vitter, provost and executive vice president for academics. Click here for more information on the Texas A&M University and college-wide Research Roadmap process.

CEHD CPI Process for Identifying CEHD Research Strengths

  • Step 1: Department heads and CPI representative(s) meet to outline the process to be facilitated by academic program leaders (by October 13)
  • Step 2: Resources and process information are e-mailed to academic program leaders
  • (by October 15)
  • Step 3: Academic program leaders facilitate a collaborative identification and description of 3-5 program research priorities (by October 24)
  • Step 4: Academic program leaders report these priorities on a customized Web page  (by October 31; extended to November 5)
  • Step 5: CPI and Dean's representatives meet to prioritize information provided by program leaders and identify college themes (by November 5)
  • Step 6: Dean Palmer and Department heads provide feedback on initial themes (by November 10)
  • Step 7: Draft report is prepared by Associate Dean and CPI Chair and shared with CEHD faculty (see Texas A&M Academic Master Planning 2008-2009 document for a complete outline of required content) (by November 17; extended to November 22)
  • Step 8: Feedback from faculty reviewed and report edited (by November 25; extended to November 28)
  • Step 9: Required report submitted to university level administration (by December 1)
In implementing the above process, departmental CPI representatives met with Department heads and the chairs of academic programs and divisions to explain the planning development process (Step 1). Information about the resources for the college planning process was also disseminated to all CEHD faculty by the Dean and the Associate Dean for Research (Step 2).

Each academic program was asked to identify three to five areas of research strength and to submit these to the CPI using a structured online form developed by CEHD systems administrator Arlen Strader. Additionally, CEHD research centers, faculty interest groups and individual faculty were invited to submit additional research strengths for inclusion in the plan using a separate online form. Only 50 percent of programs and divisions completed this assignment by the original deadline, so the deadline was extended. Staff in the Associate Dean’s office worked with program and division chairs to make sure that 100 percent participation by programs and divisions was achieved (Steps 3 and 4).
