Dr. Jim Scheurich, professor and head of the Department of Educational Administration and Human Resource Development is one of three presidential nominees for the American Educational Research Association (AERA) - the most prominent international, educational research professional organization.
The AERA has a membership of 25,000 educators, administrators, research directors, counselors, evaluators, graduate students, behavioral scientists and those who work in testing and evaluation in federal, state and local agencies. The disciplines represented by the membership include education, psychology, statistics, sociology, history, economics, philosophy, anthropology and political science. The organization is concerned with improving the educational process by encouraging scholarly inquiry related to education and evaluation and by promoting the dissemination and practical application of research results.
Scheurich came to Texas A&M University to serve as professor and department head in 2004; he had spent the previous 12 years at the University of Texas. Since 1998, he has been the editor of the International Journal of Qualitative Studies in Education. He is the author or co-author of five books and has additionally authored or co-authored 35 journal articles.
Scheurich's research interests include equity in education, schools and districts that are successful with historically marginalized students, educational accountability and qualitative research methodologies. He has helped prepare over 20 doctoral students for careers as university professors and has raised more than $6 million in external funds, all focused on improving school for low-income children and children of color.
The newly elected president will be announced at AERA's annual meeting in March 2008, serve as president-elect for one year and then serve as president beginning in March 2009.
Also nominated are Dr. Carol D. Lee of Northwestern University and Dr. Marcelo M. Suarez-Orozco of New York University.
