Student Receives Study Abroad Grant from Phi Kappa Phi

5/8/08

There is more to student life at Texas A&M than taking classes and participating in the numerous traditions making Aggieland what it is today.  Students work hard and when they are presented an opportunity to expand their education outside the borders of College Station, Texas, they take it.

Christine Marie Maberry, a junior education major in the Department of Teaching, Learning and Culture, will expand her own borders by studying abroad in Tuscany, Italy, this summer.  This educational trip is made possible by a $1,000 study abroad grant from Phi Kappa Phi, one of the nation's largest honor societies.

Maberry was chosen from 350 national applicants, the most to date, to receive this award.  The grant is designed to help support undergraduates seeking experience and knowledge in their field by studying abroad.  Fifty grants are awarded each year; Maberry is the only recipient from Texas A&M University.

"I feel so blessed to have received the Phi Kappa Phi study abroad grant," says Maberry. "Without it I would not be able to go on my trip, which will take me through the romantic countryside of Tuscany to the small town of Castiglion Fiorentino."

Students who take advantage of the study abroad program enhance their degree with their exposure to other cultures and ways of life.  Maberry will be studying at Texas A&M's Santa Chiara Study Center for the entire month of June.  While in Italy, she will take two courses: Multicultural and Interdisciplinary Literature for the Middle Grades and Special Topics in Teaching Writing (fourth-grade through eighth-grade classrooms).

"By participating in this unique opportunity, I look forward to the expansion of my world view and learning about the bias in American literature and history," says Maberry. "I desire to educate special leaders of future generations-children who understand there is a huge world out there and not every other person experiences the same freedoms they do."

Maberry's future plans include returning to Texas A&M after graduation to pursue a master's degree in educational technology.
