CEHD Student Athletes Honored for Success in Sport and Classroom

By Lauren Rouse

Several College of Education and Human Development (CEHD) student athletes were recognized at the Texas A&M University Center for Student-Athlete Services CHAMPS Program Luncheon on May 2, at The Zone in Kyle Field.

Of the major awards handed out to students at the event, four went to CEHD students: Christi Hahn (volleyball) received the Bill Erwin-Verizon Scholar-Athlete of the Year award; Chandler Rainey (cross country/track and field) and T.J. Sanders (football) received the Prentice Gautt Postgraduate Scholarship; and Clora Williams (track and field) received the Distinguished Lettermen's Athlete of the Year award.

"I received the Dr. Prentice Gautt Big XII Postgraduate Scholarship. I was honored to receive it.  I know that there are many other qualified candidates for the award," Sanders, a kinesiology major said. "I consider it a tremendous blessing and am very thankful."

Rainey, a kinesiology major, adds that receiving the Prentice Gautt Post graduate Scholarship will help her honor those who have helped her succeed on the track and in the classroom.

"It was great to win that scholarship because I have put so much time, heart, effort, friendships, dedication and willpower in running cross country and track over the past four years that it just feels so good to be honored with this scholarship," Rainey said. "And, one of the reasons why I am going to podiatry school is because podiatrists are the doctors who enabled me to run injury free for almost two years in college after analyzing my gait and giving me custom orthotics.  I want to work with athletes in the future and help others with their career just like my podiatrists did for me."

Over 99 student-athletes and student support staff from the college were honored at the luncheon that was run almost entirely by representatives from the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee with direction from the Center for Student-Athlete Services.

"The CHAMPS banquet is a great opportunity to celebrate academic success," Sanders said. "It is also a great way to meet other athletes and acknowledge their successes."

The CHAMPS program seeks to encourage student-athlete excellence and development through resources and support in the five areas of the NCAA Life Skills program: Academics, Athletics, Personal Development, Career Development, and Community Service and Leadership.
