Council on Teacher Education

The Council on Teacher Education consists of twelve members of the general faculty, three students, and members from local school districts who are appointed by the president of the university. This unit reports to the senior vice president and provost and to the president. Terms of office for faculty members are three years, and for students, one year. The origin of the council dates from 1955, when the Texas Education Agency adopted the following standard:

To be approved for teacher education, a college or university shall have on the campus one central agency or group vested with authority and responsibility to approve teacher education curricula. All campus departments concerned with teacher education should be represented in such an agency or group which also would be responsible for certifying to the Texas Education Agency whenever a student has completed an approved program for teacher education.

Specifically, the Council on Teacher Education performs the following functions:

  • Council serves as an advisory body to the senior vice president and provost and to the president regarding all matters relating to teacher education.
  • The council maintains an inventory of teacher education programs at Texas A&M University.
  • The council reviews and acts upon all new teacher education programs revisions to existing programs proposed by the teacher education departments on campus. Course or program changes which must be reviewed by other University agencies are prepared by the council and sent to the appropriate office.
  • The council reviews individually the recommendations which come from the teacher education departments on campus for those students who are proposed for a teaching certificate, and prepares the necessary forms required by the Texas Education Agency for the issuance of the appropriate certificate to the individual student concerned.
  • The council reviews and responds to all correspondence from the Texas Education Agency relating to matters involving certification requirements and changes in the standards for the approval of the various teacher education programs.
  • In addition, the council keeps all essential records related to the approval status of the various teacher education programs.
  • Members of the council attend relevant and appropriate teacher education meetings called by the Texas Education Agency and other regional and national accrediting bodies involved in the preparation of teachers.
  • The council serves as an appeals board to hear petitions from students who have been denied admission to teacher education programs.

The council meets regularly on a monthly basis and in addition, has called meetings when they are deemed necessary to discharge the business of the council.
