The Graduate Instruction Committee (GIC) is a standing committee of the College of Education and Human Development intended to promote faculty participation and leadership in the pursuit of excellence in graduate education. The GIC consists of a tenured or tenure-track Graduate Faculty Member from each of the departments appointed by the Dean from nominations made by Department Heads in consultation with department faculty.
Department Representatives are appointed to staggered 2-year terms, and may be re-appointed. In addition to the Department Representatives, the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs serves as a the chair, and the Graduate Student Advisory Council and Graduate Staff each select a nonvoting member to serve on the GIC. The Chair of the GIC serves as the college representative to the Texas A&M Graduate Council (GC), which reports to the Faculty Senate and Academic Program Council.
The GIC serves as the primary advisory group for the Dean and the College for graduate education. All policies affecting graduate education should pass through the GIC for consideration. Policy recommendations regarding graduate education in the College are referred from the GIC to the Dean's Council. The GIC is expected to review and approve new graduate courses in the College prior to sending them forward to the Texas A&M Graduate Council. The GIC also reviews and approves Graduate Faculty appointments within the College, consistent with university, college and department rules. With the Distinguished Research Fellows, the GIC selects winners for the college's Outstanding Dissertation Award. The GIC also works with the Dean, Department Heads, and department faculty to plan and schedule graduate program reviews, to evaluate the information derived from these reviews, and to formulate appropriate follow-up.
GIC Department Representatives are charged with keeping the faculty in their respective departments apprised of GIC activities, of new or changing Texas A&M policies, and of other developments affecting graduate education. Department Representatives are also responsible for soliciting input from the faculty in their departments regarding important decisions at the college or university level that affect graduate education. The nonvoting graduate student and graduate staff representatives serve similar functions for their respective constituencies. The Associate Dean for Academic Affairs serves as a liaison between the GIC, the Dean, and Texas A&M (e.g., GOC, Office of Graduate Studies, Provost).
