Texas A&M University is a school full of unique spirit that transcends through generations of Aggies. Not only is the spirit of the 12th Man strong, the university community also boasts a strong philanthropic spirit raising thousands of dollars for charities each year. The College of Education and Human Development (CEHD) leadership is deeply interested in giving back to the community and recently supported the annual fund drive of KAMU FM (90.9 FM), a public radio station broadcasting in Aggieland since 1977. A total of $1,500 was raised during the station's spring fund drive held on April 7; members of the college's leadership team matched that amount for a total of $3,000.
"I have always felt that 'giving back' to a good cause is one of the responsibilities of being a proactive community citizen," said Dennie Smith. "I personally listen to KAMU more than any radio station and appreciate the news, entertainment and overall variety of programming."
Kracht hopes that the funds raised will allow KAMU FM's good public radio programming, which includes classical, jazz, international music, and news programs from NPR and other distributors, to continue in the Brazos Valley.
"When I came to Texas A&M in 1974, there was not a public radio station in the community," he said. "The fund drive was important because public radio would not exist here if it were not for widespread community support."
"The good things in every community necessitate the participation of the people in that community," Kracht continued. "We would have very little of value in the community if it were not for voluntary efforts of thousands of people who unselfishly give their time, abilities, and money. Voluntary efforts enrich the life of the volunteer and the life of the entire community."
During his guest appearance during the fundraiser, Jim and Erin were able to talk about the College of Education and Human Devleopment. During breaks in music they had the opportunity to tell the local community about the great things that happen the college.
"I think you have to set an example and offer the opportunity for others to see how rewarding it can be to volunteer time, talents, and financial support to quality causes," said Kracht.
