History

The College of Education originated in 1969. The history of the College, as well as each departmental history was collected during the 30th anniversary in 1999.

Enrollment

Spring 2007 enrollment included 3,914 undergraduate students and 1,227 graduate students.

Faculty

123 tenured and tenure track, 24 clinical faculty and 48 lecturers as of fall 2006.

National Rankings

US News, in 2008, ranked the college 34th among all professional schools of education and 25th among all public professional schools. The Administration/Supervision program ranked 22nd. In 2005-2006 the college ranked 19th nationally in awarding doctorates to African Americans and 12th in awarding doctorates to Hispanics.

External Funding

The College had approximately $17 million in research expenditures from funding agencies including NSF, NIH, US Department of Education, numerous state agencies and private foundations.

Endowed professorships and chairs

The College has 8 endowed chairs and professorships, totaling more than $11 million. They include: Robert Armstrong is the Omar Smith Endowed Chair of Health and Physical Education; Yvonna Lincoln is the Ruth Harrington Endowed Chair in Educational Leadership; Douglas Palmer is the Sydney and J. L. Huffines Endowed Chair of Education; Stephanie Knight and Norvella Carter are both Houston Endowment, Inc. Endowed Chairs in Urban Education; Gerald Kulm is the Robert Curtis Endowed Chair in Mathematics Education.
