New master's degree programs in bilingual education, special education and sport management at Texas A&M University were endorsed Friday (May 23) by The Texas A&M University System Board of Regents.
Texas A&M President Elsa Murano said the demand is growing for teachers with master's in bilingual education will be of particular value in meeting needs in Central Texas.
She said the proposed new special education degree programs will help address the projected 15-percent increase in the need for teachers in this area by 2016.
The proposed new master's in sport management would be the first at the graduate level in Texas, Murano noted, and the state stands to benefit significantly from the unique opportunity for participants to collaborate on research through Texas A&M's Center for Sport Management Research and Education.
In authorizing the new master's programs for the College of Education and Human Development, the regents stipulated that the proposals now be submitted to the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board for its approval.
The regents also discussed a concept paper to establish the Center for Technology-Mediated Learning in Mathematics within the College of Science at Texas A&M. The proposed center would conduct research on educational methods for using technology more effectively in the classroom. The board will consider the center's formal establishment at a subsequent meeting.
