Texas A&M University moved toward expanding its reach in the Middle Eastern country of Qatar by proposing a dual degree program with Qatar University designed to improve teacher preparation there.
The proposed master of education in curriculum and instruction degree, approved Thursday by The Texas A&M University System Board of Regents, would train future curriculum specialists in schools and educational agencies.
The existing master of education in curriculum and instruction degree would be granted by Texas A&M, while the master of educational sciences would be granted by Qatar University.
A Texas A&M branch campus that opened in Qatar in 2003 emphasizes engineering and offers undergraduate programs in electrical, chemical, mechanical and petroleum engineering. Texas A&M University at Qatar is fully funded by Qatar Foundation.
The regents also approved on Thursday cooperative doctorate of education programs in educational administration and curriculum and instruction between Texas A&M and Texas A&M International University.
The next step for the joint and cooperative degree programs is to request approval by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board.
