Houston Scholar Loan Program: This loan is for students pursuing teacher certification at the elementary or secondary level or majoring in Interdisciplinary Studies. A recipient must be seeking to teach in public schools in the Houston area in one of the following counties: Brazoria, Chambers, Fort Bend, Galveston, Harris, Liberty, Montgomery or Waller. A scholarship is awarded for one year, but a recipient may compete for renewal each year.

King Endowed English Teaching Scholar Loan Program: This loan is for students who are beginning their junior year and may include one year at the graduate level. A recipient must be seeking certification as a secondary English teacher or majoring Interdisciplinary Studies major with English as an area of specialization.

King Endowed Math/Science Teaching Scholar Loan Program: This loan is for students who are beginning their junior year and may include one year at the graduate level. A recipient must be seeking certification as a secondary math or physical science teacher or majoring in Interdisciplinary Studies with math or science as an area of specialization.

Harry Lucas Scholar Loan Program: This loan is for students pursuing teacher certification at the secondary level or majoring in Interdisciplinary Studies. A recipient must be seeking certification in math or science as a teaching field or area of specialization. A scholarship is awarded for one year, but a recipient may compete for renewal each year. 

Laura Todd Romberg Math/Science Teaching Scholar Loan Program:  This loan is for students who are beginning their freshman year. A recipient must be seeking certification as a secondary math or physical science teacher or majoring in Interdisciplinary Studies with math or science as an area of specialization. A scholarship is awarded for one year, but a recipient may compete for renewal each year. One award is granted every four years. 

San Antonio Scholar Loan Program: This loan is for students pursuing teacher certification at the elementary or secondary level or majoring in Interdisciplinary Studies. A recipient must be seeking to teach in public schools in the San Antonio area in one of the following counties: Atascosa, Bandera, Bexar, Comal, Guadalupe, Kendall, Medina or Wilson. A scholarship is awarded for one year, but a recipient may compete for renewal each year.

Stark Foundation Scholar Loan Program: This loan is for students pursuing teacher certification at the elementary or secondary level or majoring in Interdisciplinary Studies. A recipient must be seeking to teach in the public schools in Orange County. A scholarship is awarded for one year, but a recipient may compete for renewal each year.

Eligibility Requirements for King Math/Science or English Scholar Loans

  • Score 1000 SAT, "B" high school average
  • Written statement-expressing commitment to pursuing a career as a teacher
  • Evidence of high school, university, and community involvement that indicate a strong commitment to the profession of education 

Retention Requirements for Texas A&M Scholar Loans

  1. Students who receive a King Endowed Math/Science Teaching Scholar loan and the King Endowed English Teaching Scholar loan must maintain an overall 3.0 GPR at TEXAS A&M.
  2. Students who receive a King Endowed Math/Science Teaching Scholar loan or a King Endowed English Teaching Scholar loan must carry 15 credit-hours of course work per semester as an undergraduate (12 hours per semester as a graduate student) and correspond with their sponsor at the end of each semester as to their academic progress.

Major Components of the Scholar Loan Programs

  • Texas A&M Scholar Loans are sponsored by interested foundations and individuals. They are named for the foundation or individual making the scholar loan available.
  • Loans range from $1,000 to $3,000 per year.
  • Any student receiving a Scholar Loan and not fulfilling the teaching obligation within five years after graduation must reimburse the scholar loan fund on a prorated basis.
  • As a condition of the award, each recipient must sign a statement of their commitment to teaching and a memorandum of understanding and agreement as to his/her responsibility in meeting the obligation of one year's teaching for each year of Scholar Loan assistance.
  • Students accepting Scholar Loans must teach as a certified teacher one-year for every year they receive a scholar loan. Loans are forgiven according to the following schedule:
