Technology Services supports two types of conferencing systems: video conferencing and web-based desktop conferencing. Detailed information of both systems follows.
A videoconference is a set of interactive telecommunication technologies which allow two or more locations to interact via two-way video and audio transmissions simultaneously. Videoconferences provide the capability to exchange live transmissions of video and audio and of computer images to a distant site or sites. Videoconferences are provided through the Internet and utilize equipment with Internet Protocols to code and decode the audio and visual data. At Texas A&M University, there is not a charge for using the Videoconference system for university business.
Centra is a web conferencing application that has both instructional and administrative uses. Centra can be used to present to and/or conference with individuals or groups of all sizes at a distance. Centra users can be in any location where there is access to a computer that is connected to the Internet. Centra's functions include audio conferencing, video conferencing, presentation tools, text chatting, application sharing, feedback tools, and assessment tools.
