A participant of the Texas A&M/Qatar Teacher Preparation Program, a collaborative program implemented by the College of Education and Human Development at Qatar University (QU), has won the "Young Alumna of the Year" Award from QU.
Latifa Al-Kuwari, who graduated with a Primary Education diploma from QU in 2006, was recognized as an alumna who has made a significant contribution to the workplace exemplifying the education standards and values of Qatar University, and whose accomplishments instill pride in QU's students, faculty and staff.
"In my first year of teaching, I was able to use all the methods and strategies that I have learned at the university to help me create my own philosophy about education," says Al-Kuawri. "It is built on 'that each child deserves to learn according to his ability and his intelligence.' I am proud of this award and the support and trust I had from my family and my professors."
Al-Kuawri is now a third grade teacher in Qatar. She is currently teaching students with special needs in the same class with other students, under the Inclusion Program in Public Schools.
"We are seeking to honor young men and women who act as catalysts for their peers," said Dr. Sheikha Bint Jabor Al Thani, Vice President and Chief Academic Affairs for QU. "We at QU have a great admiration of [Latifa's] performance, which has crossed the border beyond simply surviving the profession, to adding real value and leaving a genuine impact."
The Texas A&M/Qatar Teacher Preparation Program builds on the University of Qatar's mission of providing quality higher education for Qatari citizens to meet the needs of Qatar society. The program was modeled after Texas A&M University's teacher preparation and certification options. This special program meets international teacher accreditation standards and prepares the highest quality teachers for schools in the State of Qatar.
Graduates from this program are prepared to teach kindergarten through 6th grade level children the core curriculum knowledge and skills identified in the Qatar School Reform Initiative.
